Our history

James Eugene "Gene" Falin began his career in funeral service as a teenager. His mentor was the late E.H. McConnell, owner of McConnell Funeral Home.

In the late 1930's and 1940's, McConnell Funeral Home was the only funeral service establishment in Scott County. Mr. McConnell took Gene under his wing and instilled by deed and action the true value of a funeral professional — the commitment to service for families during their most difficult times.

Gene Failin founded Gate City Funeral Home, Inc., in a house located on Park Street in 1959, with his wife, Juanita S. Falin, by his side. In 1962, Gene purchased the property that is now the site of Gate City Funeral Home. Sadly, Gene did not see his dream of building a funeral home for the people of Scott County fulfilled. An accident took his life in November of 1964.

Believing in her late husband's dream, Juanita finished the construction of the funeral home, and in late 1965 the doors to Gate City Funeral were opened. Juanita became the person that the people of Scott County depended on in their most trying times. She was a woman with a vision, who saw the need to expand on the Funeral Home's services. Duffield Funeral Home, a branch of Gate City Funeral Home, was established and opened in 1985, and was later sold in the year 2000.

Juanita operated the funeral home, along with her daughter Bettye F. Miller and grandson Kelly Ison, until health problems prevented her from continuing. Juanita S. "Nannie" Falin passed away after a lifetime of service to the people of Scott County through Gate City Funeral Home.

Bettye and Kelly now own the funeral home and their purpose, values and vision are the same as the shared visions of Gene and Juanita Falin. Bettye and Kelly believe the best business plan is an unwavering commitment to superior service, convenience and quality. They continue to serve the families of Scott County and surrounding communities in the same manner that would make Gene and Juanita proud.
